30 Days!

So with the baby now officially scheduled to arrive less than a month away (June 20th), Lindsay and I have been slowly getting things together for his/her arrival.

We've got a nice stroller/car seat combo (modeled here nicely with a teddy bear)

A pak n' play (with the move to Indiana on the way we figured that it would be 100 times easier than a crib, so we're waiting on buying anything big for now) filled with a menagerie of stuffed animals

Lots of blankets and onesies for the little newborn

And even some gender specific clothes!

I think we've done a pretty good job so far of getting the basics set. We've been doing some reading up in preparation for the big day, trying to get a feel for what to expect when the baby actually gets here. But let me ask this question of all you parents out there, what were some of the unexpected things that you found you needed in the first few days after the baby came? Maybe just as important, what were some things that you may have bought that turned out to be not-so-important (at least for the first little bit of baby's life)?

  1. I didn't even know you guys were expecting!! I'm such a terrible papi... Have fun with the move to the good ol' Midwest! We sure miss it!

  2. Kyle--when you find out pass that info along to the girls invited to Lindsay's baby shower! I'd much rather get you something you need than something this non-parent thought was cute, especially with the upcoming move!

  4. Do you really want the gory specifics of what you'll need right away?? Lindsay will need nipple cream, breast pads -you might be tempted to get the box with tons of thin ones- but the thicker more expensive kind actually absorb, wait to get nursing bras till the milk comes in- target has some good ones. Right away the baby wont need much more than the obvious- diapers and onsies, socks, and sleepers, pacifiers, I really like those velcro swaddle blanket things though. The boppy pillows are nice for the first couple months but a normal pillow is just good. Oh- you might want some sort of plastic changing pad thing because (esp if its a boy) you;ll have messes as soon as you take the diaper off! We grabbed a couple of those scrubby things for scrubbing in at the hospital to scrub Archie's head to help with cradle cap- but as long as you brush the scalp daily any baby brush might work. But all that other stuff like bouncers and swings can probably wait till after you move! (And we only have all that stuff because people handed down many things to us- really we spend most of Archie's wake time on the floor!) By the way did you guys get that gift I sent?

  5. Ah, phew, I'm glad Saxey Family already spilled the beans on the unpleasant things Linds will need so now I don't have to. One thing to add though is that I used one of those inflatable plastic ring pillows (I think they're supposed to be for people with a hernia) and it super duper helped.

I don't know if you've looked into different ideas about sleep scheduling but I really wished I'd known more about it from the start. I'd recommend reading the books On Becoming Baby Wise and Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Baby.

You're right, baby won't need a TON of stuff to start out. We used a lot of thin blankets for swaddling. Cloth diapers are great for spit up. I'd probably get at least two or three sheets for the pack n play, since things can get messy fast. Oh, vaseline- good if there's a circumcision to care for (though there won't be because it's a girl. Mark my words). Little cotton pads are nice for washing baby's face during a bath.

Oo, is Lindsay having a baby shower?
